I am sick and tired of our typical Asian mentality. Let me make this clear once and for all. Education is about seeking knowledge, to open up our thoughts, broaden our mind. Having said that, it really annoys me whenever the older generation advised us to seek proper education in a foreign country in the name of money. They believed that with a degree, one can make lots of money by sitting in an air-con room facing a monitor from 9 to 5, on the other hand, with a master, your boss will offer you a dream job and some stock option thrown in together with a big fat pay slip every month, life is perfect. Pathetic.
Come on, let’s be realistic and use some god given brain cells provided that they are not as dead as their thinking and looks. Wearing a graduation gowns and a mortarboard over our head does not guarantee us a working life filled with roses, believe me, office jobs can be torturing. Some dream job can be a bed of roses… … with the thorns.
I believe the older generation perceived highly of people with degree or master, probably they don’t have the luxury of a good education. I understand the limited opportunity during their time, but to have a kiddy thought of degree holders are showered with red roses whenever people bump into them is akin to not knowing how babies are made. Let’s face the fact that with a degree you are not the savior of your family and you are not likely to drive a Mercedez-Benz in your miserable short life as oppose to Joe the farmer with 10 hectares of land sweating under the hot sun.
For crying out loud, wake up! Joe the farmer is richer and healthier, he grows his own vegetables and dispose his heavily intoxicated vegetables to a hypermarket near you, he lives a comfortable punch card and stress free life, while you work your ass off building your bosses dream. End of the day, you struggled to make ends meet, couldn’t afford to pay your child’s education bill, heavily in debt, lived in a second hand link houses with free water every time it rains, and the best part is, life rewards you with high blood pressure and 30 years down the road, you turned into food for the maggots and fertilizer for the plants while Joe the farmer continues pumping out babies like a rabbit powered by Duracell batteries.
Let us make this clear, education is not about making more money, never. Undeniably a proper education is the stepping stone towards a better future, how you shape your future depends on the path you choose, because you had a proper education, your opinions are broader, therefore your path is not limited to a few options. One thing for sure, with a degree, you’ll never go hungry.
To be successful in life, you only need ‘passion’ and not some degree/master printed on a recycled toilet paper. Follow your heart.

on November 6th, 2009You are right. I wish more people think like you. I have a masters degree and now I am going to start a farm instead of going into business.
